The grand mosque in Kufa, south of Iraq, is hosting the 11th edition of a nationwide Quran competition.

Titled “Iraqi Elites”, the contest has been organized by the National Quranic Sciences Center affiliated to the Shias Awqaf Department in cooperation with the custodianship of the mosque.

It got underway in a ceremony on Thursday morning with the recitation of verses from the Quran by Hassan Ala, the winner of the previous edition.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Rafi al-Ameri, director of the center, said there are 41 contenders in this edition.

According to al-Ameri, 27 of them compete in the category of recitation and the other 14 in memorization of the Quran.

They represent Quran centers affiliated to holy sites in different parts of the Arab country as well as the Popular Mobalization forces, known as Hashd al-Shaabi.

The competition will run until Sunday and top winners will be selected as Iraq’s representatives at international Quranic events.
