Shia Rights Watch issued a statement on the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, calling for attention to the extent of the suffering inflicted on Shia Muslims.

The organization said in the statement, “The international community remembers, on August 21 of every year, the victims of terrorism, in an expression aimed at bringing justice to the innocent people who were killed by individuals, extremist groups, organizations or governments that practice terror against defenseless civilians. Recent history has hundreds of thousands of civilians who have fallen victim to terrorism, and some communities still suffer from the violations of terrorist organizations and entities, especially Shia Muslims.”

The statement added, “Between direct targeting with murder, kidnapping, or physical and moral assaults, many Shia Muslims suffer from systematic terrorism, behind which political, sectarian and takfiri agendas stand. They consider the liquidation, displacement and marginalization of the Shias as a legitimate goal according to the strategy or ideology that drives their ideas.”

The statement continued, “These systematic terrorist operations were not limited to the developing world, as the countries known to be civilized witnessed many terrorist operations that targeted Shia Muslims in particular, as well as the ongoing terrorist violations in the regions of the Middle East, as millions of Shias are living under the clutches of military, intellectual and political terrorism are practiced by political groups such as the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan, or as terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, ISIS and Boko Haram in more than one country, in addition to state terrorism practiced by the regimes as is the case in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and its intimidating policies towards Shia citizens.

Shia Rights Watch stressed the need for the United Nations to pay attention to the extent of the suffering inflicted on Shia Muslims and to work to open the files of this situation.
