Judge denies request to halt building of Michigan mosque

Plans to build a new mosque in Sterling Heights can move forward after a judge this week denied a request by opponents of the mosque to issue a preliminary injunction blocking the proposed Islamic center on 15 Mile Road.

The decision was cheered by supporters of the mosque while opponents said they plan to continue their battle to stop the proposed building that has drawn angry opposition from some residents in Sterling Heights.

In his June 28 ruling, U.S. District Judge Gershwin Drain said that a lawsuit filed in March by the conservative group American Freedom Law Center on behalf of several Sterling Heights residents does "not have a strong likelihood of success on their claims."
