US Commission: Banning Shia prisoners from religious books contravenes Bahrain's obligations

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has expressed concern over reports that Bahrain's government is preventing Shia prisoners from accessing prayer books and other religious texts in its prisons.

The Commission said this was contrary to Bahrain's international human rights obligations.

The Bahrain Center for Dialogue and Tolerance has revealed that the Bahraini regime has banned dozens of religious books, including those belonging to Shia authorities, including Grand Ayatollah Sayed Ali al-Sistani.
