Library in Berlin says owns oldest surviving pages of Quran

A Swiss laboratory has reportedly confirmed through radiocarbon dating that parchment pages from a Quran copy date back to no more than 20 years after the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny.

The fragmentary Quran is believed to be one of the oldest remaining in the world.

The leaves belonged to a German scholar who lived in Cairo early in the 20th century.

According to reports, the main academic library in Berlin purchased the German’s papers after his death.

A Swiss laboratory has confirmed that the radiocarbon dating shows that the parchment dates from between 606 and 652 C.E., or no more than 20 years after the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him and his progeny, in 632.
